SUPERCAPACITOR-The Future of Energy Storage Device

“Supercapacitor” The Future High Density Energy Storage Device.

SUPERCAPACITOR USED IN UPS

Supercapacitors form a new class of electrochemical energy storage device which  play an important role in providing very high electric power boost demanded by critical loads applications.

The  main Advantage of “Supercapacitor” is that it can be charged within  seconds rather than hours.

discharged as very high pulse current over million recharge cycles.

Supercapacitor suitable for facilities prone to small or very short Power  Interruptions .

Supercapacitor

ADVANTAGES :

1. Supercapacitor is environment friendly, maintenance free.

2. Efficiency level 98%, can operate at wide temperature range of - 40°C to + 70°C,

3. It covers life span of 15 years without any quick ageing.

4. Ultra Fast Charging .

5. No Maintenance risks .

6. No Fire Risks .

7. Ultra High Power Density .

8. Small carbon Footprint .

9. Supercapacitor can store Energy 10,000 times more energy than a standard ups capacitor .

10. High cycle efficiency 95%.

DISADVANTAGES:-

1. Back up time is less few minutes .

2. Discharge rate is faster .

3. Doesn't hold constant voltage during discharge .

NOTE :- Thus in the near future the chances of the supercapacitor replacing the battery are remote. However, battery-supercapacitor with electronic controller combine power pack is likely to find use in many low voltage applications.

Battery vs. Supercapacitor

• For decades, battery has been the preferred form of energy storage as it has high energy density (10~100 Wh/kg).

• However, limited by operating temperature (typically 0°C~40°C) and cycle life (2 years or 500 charge-discharge cycles), battery is neither rugged nor durable enough for industrial applications.

• Supercapacitor, also called electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), is an emerging category of capacitor offering 10~100 times more energy density than electrolytic capacitor (1~10 Wh/kg).

• In addition to its impressive energy density, supercapacitor also has a wide operating temperature range (-40°C~85°C) and long operating life (10 years or 500,000 charge-discharge cycles).

• These two traits help make it a reliable industrial power backup solution.

• The advantages of supercapacitors are particularly pronounced, with output currents rising to hundreds of amps or even thousands of amps with almost no delay, and fast charging, energy storage in a short period of time, and 50,000 cycle life Do not need care for ten years, so that UPS is truly maintenance-free.

• Sealed lead Acid VRLA batteries continue to dominate the Ups Market , However as costs continue to fall Supercapacitor are quickly becoming viable solutions.

• Supercapacitor suitable for application where short power interruptions and backup time in few minutes , whereas batteries has 60 minutes backup .

• Supercapacitor has wider temperature tolerance suitable for harsher environments , VRLA batteries need to maintain at  25 degree centigrade .

• Batteries are the most common solution to backup power in a Ups but it also acts as weakest link in the system and leading to cause of Power related problems and downtime , Chances of Battery blast and battery open are higher in case of power interruptions .

Supercapacitor are the Energy storage Solutions providing Reliable Backup power for protecting Mission  Critical Applications loads from unplanned Downtime .
